With Pastor Harold Custer and his wife, Kay Custer, visiting family in Ohio there was a job opening, albeit a temporary one, at St. Andrews. Who would occupy the pulpit on Sunday while our regular pastors toured the Buckeye state? The answer was simple, Rev. Custer of course, Wesley Custer that is.
There is an old saying that goes , ” It runs in some families.” That is truly the case with the Custer family and the congregation at St. Andrews UMC could not be happier. Harold Custer, our Senior Pastor at St. Andrews, is the patriarch of the Custer clan and holds a Phd in theology while his wife Kay is a dynamic and seasoned pastor as well. Lucky for us at St. Andrews, Paster Harold and Rev. Kay have raised two sons, Nathan and Wesley, who have joined the family business.
The youngest of the Custer’s boys, Wesley D. Custer, took the position normally filled by his dad and delivered Sunday’s sermon. To make things even more Custer family centric was the fact that Wesley’s grandfather, Hubert Custer, was part of Sunday’s congregation. Rev. Wesley D. Custer’s sermon was insightful and hopeful. Rev. Custer shared some of the hurdles his own family is facing, which includes major plumbing woes in their home, two recent eye surgeries his wife, Katie, has recently undergone, all of this while trying to raise their young son, Alex. According to Rev. Wesley, these problems can seem be as big as Goliath, but can be slain just as easily as long as you have God on your side.
While Sundays are not the same when Paster Harold and Rev. Kay are out of town, it was a pleasure to have a member of the Custer clan at St. Andrews. And who knows, with 4 grandsons we may see many more years of Custers carrying on the family business.
